SET A GOAL TO BECOME A BJJ BLACK BELT!
Building from a strong understanding of fundamental techniques and moves, the Jiu Jitsu student is ready to learn advance details, tactics and strategies. The goal of the advanced class is to teach the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu student the finer points of position and moves, learn how to string together a series of movements, become technically proficient despite being physically fatigued and stressed, and have a clear understanding of each position.
The advanced GI class will take the fundamental core moves and put together a sequence of movements and attacks. Instead of focusing on the one technique being performed, the student will use the first technique to set up the second or third move to build a movement pattern or series of attacks.
It is not enough to have a move committed to muscle memory! A thorough understanding of the position will allow the student to effectively transition in and out of techniques and know the best options to capitalize on mistakes during a counter to a move or scramble. Taking an open-minded approach and incorporating the correct attacks and movements will give the student a technical and evolving Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Game.

The class puts greater emphasis on live training sessions to perfect timing and increase the level of fitness. The ability to perform a technique at the right time is something that has to be trained from sparring sessions ( rolling ). A structured class needs drilling for instinctive muscle memory and rolling to know when to employ a technique. Your Jiu Jitsu cannot advance if either of these are lacking.
Advanced GI Positions…
SPIDER GUARD
A basic open guard that uses leg movement to manipulate your opponents balance and posture. Gripping both sleeves, the feet are placed in the biceps of the opponent or one leg is wrapped around the arm to play a spider guard with a hook. Keeping good grips on the sleeves and continuous leg movement are the key to playing an effective spider guard.
DE LA RIVA GUARD
The De la Riva guard is an open guard where one leg is wrapped around the outside of the opponent’s leg with the foot hooking his inner thigh. Typically you control one or both sleeves and attack with a variety of sweeps and submissions.
X-GUARD
The X-guard requires you to have your legs positioned between your opponent’s legs and using your feet as hooks. Using the hooks to disrupt your opponent’s base gives you many opportunities for sweeps. This X-guard is a hard position to escape because you are constantly being off-balanced in every direction.
GUARD PASS
Passing the guard at an advanced level requires the ability to string together multiple passes while controlling the movement of your opponent’s hips and legs. The advance class will focus on base and alignment, maintaining posture, and positioning grips.
KNEE ON STOMACH
Knee on stomach is typically obtained from side control, simply by rising up and placing the knee on the opponent’s stomach. Balance is kept by extending the other leg to the side and your hands are free to help in keeping balance or going for a submission.
TRANSITIONS
Learn how to transition between moves smoothly and without hesitation so you can dominate your opponent. Jiu Jitsu is based on technical movement and counters, whether it be changing positions or setting up an attack. The advance class will incorporate movement drills to reinforce the student’s ability to move effectively.
The advanced GI class is centered on the science of Jiu Jitsu and is intended for hobbyists, and students who wish to focus on the sport/competition aspect of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Feel a sense of accomplishment and commit to the goal of a Mass Bay Boston BJJ Black belt!
